How to Romanticize Your Fall Evenings

The Art of an Evening Well Spent

Autumn arrives slowly, then all at once. The summer heat has finally broken to cooler mornings and the afternoon sun hangs lower in the sky, casting a honey-colored glow across the changing leaves. Nostalgia returns to the air, and suddenly the thought of spending a night at home feels like the best plan ever. After months of chasing the last light of summer, we're ready to settle into a slower, more intimate rhythm.

While summer encourages spontaneity, autumn lends itself beautifully to cozy evenings indoors. Those slower fall evenings, are an excellent opportunity to rethink our routine. By adding rituals to our nights, we can give ourselves something to look forward to when we settle into our home evening a little earlier.

Rather than allowing our free time to become whatever remains after the work day's obligations, we can create rituals that make those hours feel entirely our own.

This summer we talked through the best way to spend our evenings. Now that the season is changing, our routines get to shift as well.

5:00 PM | Leave Work at Work

The first step toward a wonderful evening is giving yourself permission to leave the workday behind.

It's easy to carry the responsibilities of the day into your evening. You might be physically home, but your mind is still answering emails or thinking about everything that needs to get done tomorrow.

Before finishing work, write down anything that's still occupying your mind. Writing them down can make it easier to enjoy the evening without feeling as though you've forgotten something.

Once you're officially done with work, create a small ritual that marks the transition from working to living. Close your laptop and open a book, put on a record, make a cup of tea or call a friend. Find something that marks the end of the workday and signals to your brain that it's time to turn off productivity mode and start to enjoy yourself.

5:30 PM | Catch the Last of the Light

As the days grow shorter, the final hours of daylight become especially precious.

Rather than heading straight for the couch when you get home, make a habit of stepping outside while the sun is still up. Autumn is a beautiful season to walk through your neighborhood and watch the landscape change.

Spending time outdoors also helps us stay connected to the natural rhythms of the season. Exposure to daylight supports our circadian rhythm, while a little movement after a long workday can help reset your nervous system.

There's no need to turn your walk into a workout or give it a destination. Let yourself wander for the pleasure of it. By the time you return home, you'll have had a moment to yourself, and the warmth waiting inside will feel all the more welcoming.

6:30 PM | Something Delicious Is Cooking

One of the great pleasures of autumn is returning to the kitchen.

After a summer of quick meals and eating out, the cooler weather makes the prospect of spending time in your own kitchen more appealing. Cooking is an opportunity to slow down and participate in the changing season.

Let fall’s seasonal vegetables inspire you. A pot of roasted squash soup, roasted carrots, or pumpkin bread might be just the thing to make an ordinary Tuesday feel like an occasion.

When cooking becomes a ritual rather than another household responsibility, dinner can become one of the most anticipated parts of the day. There's pleasure in taking your time to prepare a lovely meal for yourself or someone you love, especially when you allow yourself to enjoy the process as much as the finished dish.

Whether you enjoy watching a show with dinner, having a conversation, or sitting quietly, make sure to savor the moment.

8:00 PM | Make Time for Your Pleasures

How often do we reach the end of the day and realize we've spent our free time doing very little of what we actually wanted to do?

Between endless errands, household chores, and the temptation to lose ourselves in our phones, our time can escape us very easily. There's nothing wrong with a little mindless relaxation, but our evenings can offer more when we make room for activities that genuinely bring us joy.

Think about the hobbies you always talk about picking back up or that activity you've been wanting to try but keep making excuses to put off. An autumn evening is just the opportunity you need to return to a neglected creative project or finally perfect your pumpkin bread recipe.

The wonderful thing about having a hobby is that it gives you something to enjoy without needing to accomplish anything in particular. You can spend an entire evening becoming better at something or simply lose yourself in the pleasure of doing it.

Making time for your interests is a way of maintaining a relationship with yourself. When we regularly engage with the things that excite us, our life becomes our own again.

9:00 PM | The Luxury of Taking Care of Yourself

As the evening winds down, turn your attention toward the person who has carried you through the day. You.

Consider the difference between rushing through your nightly skincare and giving yourself the time to enjoy the process. When you aren't watching the clock, even the most familiar routine can become a moment to relax.

And if you're sharing your evening with a partner, this is a lovely time to introduce a little intentional touch. A slow massage with Common Confidential's Massage Butter can create a moment to care for one another. The beauty of a massage is that it asks very little of the person receiving it beyond enjoying the sensation of being touched.

Taking care of yourself also means taking care of the space you'll wake up in. Spend a few minutes tidying your bedroom and preparing your home for the morning.

Bedtime | The Best Part of the Day?

Who decided that getting into bed means the fun is over?

As the nights grow longer, bedtime can become one of the most anticipated parts of your evening. Rather than waiting until you're exhausted to crawl beneath the covers, give yourself a little time to enjoy the comfort of being there.

We're particularly fond of getting lost in a good book before bed. Disappear into another world before you drift off. And with more adventures in the A Court of Thorns and Roses universe to look forward to, we're always happy to make room for another book on the nightstand.

Let yourself linger in the comfort of your bedroom and relish those final moments of the day. Whether you're curled up beside someone you love, sharing the covers with a sleepy pet, or enjoying the delicious quiet of your own company, give yourself time to appreciate the intimacy of bedtime.

Fall in Love With Your Evenings Again

The beauty of an evening ritual isn't in following the same schedule every night. It's in discovering what makes your time feel meaningful and creating enough space in your life to enjoy it.

As autumn settles in, allow your routines to change with the season. Give yourself permission to slow down and rediscover the pleasures of spending time at home. You may find that the hours you once hurried through become the ones you look forward to most.

And perhaps that's the loveliest part of creating a routine you genuinely enjoy. The pleasure of an evening well spent accompanies you through the day with the promise of something wonderful waiting at home.
